Frequently Asked Questions
1. What made you do it?
I saw a book called Honey, Let’s Go Boating! for sale at West Marine. I read that book three times. But there was one problem…I didn’t have a BOAT.Well, the next best thing was a Jet Ski. And I figured, if other boats can do the Loop, I can do this! So I did.
2. After you retired, didn’t people wonder if you were a little NUTS?
Yep. I had doubters.
So I set up a BOOK-KEY—and people started placing bets on whether I was actually going to make it.
My mom bet that I would.
She was in the minority.
She also made a small fortune!
3. Where did you sleep, eat, and get gasoline?
Just like you do on the interstate—you stop at the marinas.
Boating people are a wonderful and helpful lot. Boaters and marinas go the distance to help one another—even a guy showing up on a Jet Ski!
Now, that being said…
The bathroom was a little TRICKY!
4. Didn’t your hand get tired holding the throttle?
Yep.But I had CRUISE CONTROL.Hmm… you want to know what cruise control is? Read the BOOK!
5. Wasn’t your BUTT sore?
Yep.
I would say, don’t try the Loop on a Jet Ski if you have “HEMORRHOIDS.”
Enough said.
9. Is everything in Dreamrider really true?
Yes.
And that’s probably why some of it sounds like it couldn’t possibly be true.
But it happened.
10. So, what’s the point of the whole adventure?
Sometimes you don’t need the biggest boat, the perfect plan, or everyone’s approval.Sometimes you just need an idea and the guts to say:“I can do this.”Then you get on the Jet Ski and go.5,805.5 miles later, you might just have a story worth telling.
6. Did you really travel 5,805.5 miles on a 12-foot Jet Ski?
Yes. 5,805.5 miles.
Through rivers, lakes, canals, and open water.
There were storms, fog, locks, breakdowns—and eventually, the Jet Ski caught fire.
Because apparently the adventure wasn’t exciting enough already.
7. Did you actually complete the Great Loop?
Yep.
Two Jet Skis later.
5,805.5 miles.
And a whole lot of stories along the way.
8. Were you trying to set a record?
Nope.
I wasn’t chasing a record.
I was chasing an adventure.
